Elise – @TheOncoPT (00:19)
Hey, Onco PT and welcome to this episode of the Onco PT podcast. I am thrilled today to be giving you a behind the scenes, backstage look at our upcoming Cancer Rehab Community Conference. We have so much to discuss today. There is so much frankly, that we have been working on behind the scenes for many, many months now, actually almost a year. Basically since last year’s conference concluded, we started working on this year’s conference.

and we are so excited to bring it to you in just a few weeks. Our speakers are booked, our sessions are scheduled, and we are now beginning the official countdown, just counting those days and hours down until November 8th and 9th when the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024 is taking place. Now, if you have not already saved your seat at the conference, you can do so now by visiting TheOncoPT.com/conference.

Now, if you haven’t heard of the Cancer Rehab Community Conference yet, let me set the scene for you. Several years ago, I went to a conference with a good friend of mine, and we went to a very oncology-specific meeting of the minds of sorts. And so we went to this session, and my friend, who is a brand new oncopete at the time, when the time came to ask questions, and actually the organizers of this particular info session said, we want your questions, please ask them,

My friend raised her hand and she says, I understand that complete decongestive therapy is the gold standard for lymphedema. And I understand how important it is to have this very specific structured plan when it comes to treating patients if we’re really going to see the best possible results.

but trying to actually make this work in the real world in my own practice is really challenging and I need help doing so. I would love your feedback and your suggestions. Now keep in mind, remember this session specifically started with we want your questions, we want to know how we can help you. And the general response to my friend’s question was, you’ll just figure it out. And that stung.

that stung as someone who was watching this unfold, listening to the passion in my friend’s voice talk about, want to make this work in my community. But the reality of clinical care is that this best practice, this research does not always translate and I need help to do so. And it was from this interaction that actually the Cancer Rehab Community Conference was born several years later when we had our first iteration last year in 2023.

And that’s what this conference is all about. It’s all about what is the information out there and then bringing it to how can we actually implement this effectively and practically within our own patient care so that our patients in our own communities are able to get the best quality cancer rehab possible.

which is exactly what we did with our first conference last year and what we are again doing at this year’s conference. And we cannot wait for you to see some of the updates that we have made over the last year. We took what we loved and what you loved about the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2023. We combined it with your feedback on the requested changes and updates that you asked us for last year. And we are making this year’s conference bigger,

and better than ever. Now, let’s look at the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024 at a glance. First and foremost, it would not be possible without our amazing speakers that we have lined up for this conference. Now, I am not going to give you a laundry list of these are every single speakers. These are all of the different topics they’re covering up. I’m going to give you a sample.

And then I’m gonna show you where you can get all of that information if you haven’t already bought your ticket and seen this information yet. So what you need to know, the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024 is again, virtual. It is a virtual conference happening on Friday, November 8th and Saturday, yes, Saturday, November 9th. And we are focusing on what is the latest information within oncology rehab? What are the insights that we need to know as clinicians, as therapists?

And how can we take some of that cutting edge research and then actually bring it into our own practice? And we’re doing this by bringing together experts and different rehab clinicians from a variety of oncology backgrounds to share their knowledge, to share their expertise, and ensure that you ultimately can leave with actionable takeaways from the conference to then implement into your own practice. We have a ton of stuff that’s being covered.

A couple of the topics to know about managing chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy with manual therapy by Dr. Katie Schmitt. Outstanding session to kick us off on Friday. So excited for that. A crash course by Dr. Julie Skrzat on cardiovascular and pulmonary toxicities of cancer treatments. I don’t know about you. I have a general appreciation for, this chemotherapy is cardio toxic.

But knowing exactly how it’s cardiotoxic and what’s most important is how it affects our patients, I’m actually not that strong on, I’m not that secure on, which is why I’m so excited that Julie is giving us this crash course and what we need to know and ultimately how do we take this information and then implement it into our own practices. Next up we have intentional and purposeful exercise prescription for our oncology patients with Dr. Andrew Chongowei. We have oncology rehab program development.

from a clinician, Dr. Abby Hegerfeld, who is doing this in her own practice and who is helping others around the country also do this in their own communities as well. How to incorporate palliative care into your own practice with Dr. Lori Bo-Wright. How to flip the script on acute care oncology rehab with Dr. Tori Crook and so, so much more. We’ve got more speakers, we have more topics coming and I would…

absolutely be doing a disservice to our conference if I did not take the time here to mention the keynote speakers we have for the conference. And yes, you heard that correctly. Keynote speakers. Plural. Now, when Kelly and I were sitting back after last year’s conference and like, my God, that was amazing. I can’t wait for next year’s conference. Like, what are we going to do this time?

We quickly started kicking around this idea of keynote speakers. And so we had this list of keynote speakers and we’re like, wow, wouldn’t it be great if one of these, one of these people said yes to being a keynote speaker at our conference. And so we started and we sent out messages to Dr. Susan Maltser and Dr. Nicole Stout explaining, this is our conference. We are looking for a keynote speaker. We think you’d be great for it. And imagine

our surprise and our delight, if you can’t already hear that in my voice, when they both said yes. They both said yes to being keynote speakers at the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024. If you don’t know, if this name, if these names are not cluing you in to some of the greatness that is going to happen, my all-time favorite article within the cancer rehab space,

is a focused review of safety considerations in cancer rehabilitation by Maltser et al. 2017. Yes, that Maltser y’all is going to be keynoting our day one, Friday, November 8th part of the conference. And then Dr. Nicole Stout, who might as well be the godmother.

of oncology rehab, certainly of the prospective surveillance model. Yeah, if you’ve ever read any of that stuff, that has her name, her work written all over that. And then Dr. Nicole Stout, as I mentioned, she’s going to be keynoting Saturday, November 9th, the day two of our conference. I mean, pinch me, pinch me. This is such a full circle moment for me, honestly, because the very first physical therapy conference I went to.

Way back in 2016, it was APTA CSM, Anaheim, California. I went with my mentor and undergrad professor, Dr. Phil Esposito, and we had a poster presentation. And I’m so blessed because my professor, Dr. Esposito, took us to this conference as like a, this is a great way to get involved, to start to see like what’s out there, even though you’re already in physical therapy school, like what is available. And I happened to stumble into a session.

with Dr. Nicole Stout and Dr. Amy Litterini on oncology rehab, treating cancer patients and survivors as a physical therapist. And that, my friends, was the day. Like, that is the day I discovered, wow, oncology physical therapy is a thing. I can’t wait to do that in my own practice, in my own life, in my own community with my own patients. And literally Dr. Nicole Stout was there for me day one.

started all of this. So, you know, if anyone is to blame for the monster that has been created in me, it’s definitely Dr. Stout and Dr. Litterini But I digress. And now Dr. Nicole Stout is keynoting our cancer rehab community conference. mean, my God. Full circle, full circle. So anyways, as you can tell, I’m really, really excited that all of this is happening for the full list of speakers.

and topics that will be covered at this year’s Cancer Rehab Community Conference, you can visit the oncopt.com slash conference and you will find all of that information and more at that website. But until then, let’s talk a little bit about what makes the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024 unique and stand out among conference experiences. So first and foremost, it is a virtual conference, which especially if you are trying to be conscious,

of how much you’re spending, excuse me, conference registrations, on travel costs, on hotel costs, this is exactly the conference for you. Not only is it virtual, which makes it extremely convenient to sit at home or your place of work, wherever that is, cuddle up with your dog or your cat or your kiddos or whoever happens to be next to you, and get this high quality cancer rehab education delivered to where you are.

Heck, you can show up in your PJs friend. I support you fully in that. Me, I’m gonna be on camera. I have to look a little more put together than in my pajamas. So I will see you on your screens Saturday and Friday, first part of November. Cannot wait to see you there. Not only is this a very convenient virtual experience, we also have really curated a personalized learning experience. We know that we have a lot of different backgrounds

and a lot of different experience levels within our attendees for the Cancer Rehab Community Conference and in our online community, which is called the Cancer Rehab Community. We know that we have all kinds of clinicians from all over the place, all kinds of different settings and patient populations, and we have made sure that there is something for everybody at this conference. Like I mentioned with the topics and the subjects.

Previously, there is so much we’re going to cover. And even if you’re like me, where you’re a solo practitioner in outpatient physical therapy, all the way ranging to a clinician on an acute care oncology unit who’s part of a multidisciplinary team, there is information at every single session that you are going to be able to take away and then implement with your own patients in your own community Monday morning when you get back from the conference.

We also have a plethora of networking opportunities, whether that is in the chat that we have. If you were there at last year’s conference, you already know that the chat was lit at the conference. I don’t know what happened, but somewhere, I know what happened. I don’t know how it happened. At some point during the conference last year, so as part of our virtual platform,

There is a chat where attendees were talking back and forth with each other, as well as with other speakers during the whole conference. And somebody, I don’t know if it was Dr. Alexandra Hill, Dr. Adam Matichak or somebody else, but someone figured out that they could put images and little videos. Now I’m going to divide the chat. I’m going to divide the audience here. I don’t know if you pronounce it GIF.

or GIF, frankly, I don’t care because somebody figured out that we could put those in the chat and then it was like gangbusters. It was on fire the whole rest of the day and frankly, it made it really fun to watch and it was very cool to see people engaging with the content in this very unique way. Now, regardless, if you’re a GIF or GIF user in the chat, beyond this, we have our question and answer sessions.

with every single speaker at the conference, meaning that you have your opportunity in a very low stakes environment to ask questions of the leaders and the experts within cancer rehab so that they can further help you take this information and apply it to your own patients in your community. We also have time for casual conversations, again, continuing in the chat between different sessions to help you overall build lasting professional relationships within.

our cancer rehab community. As I’ve mentioned previously, this conference is very much focused on the practical application. It’s great when you go to conferences and you learn the latest and greatest in research for cancer rehab. We need that, but we also need the realistic. We need the realism on how can I actually take this and put it into, put it into practice? How can I apply this with my patient?

I don’t know, John, I’m just making up a name here. How can I actually apply this to my patient John who is dealing with XYZ in his life? We have these barriers. This conference is designed to help you do that. And it’s all fostered around this inclusive community atmosphere. We take pride at the cancer rehab community in curating and creating a welcome and inclusive, welcoming, excuse me, and inclusive environment because it’s more than about just,

I know all these things. I’m so, so smart. I’m so wise in the ways of cancer rehab. This is bigger than us. This is about building a global network of clinicians, of therapists, and future therapists and clinicians, right? Because we also want students to be there and feel included and know that this is the place to go. So no matter where you’re at in your professional journey, this is dedicated to advancing the highest quality of cancer rehabilitation.

and supporting each other’s growth in this space. We know here at the cancer rehab community that when your patients get better, all of our patients get better. There’s no competition here because unfortunately we are very acutely aware, at least in the United States, there are more than enough patients with cancer to go around. There is no lack. Unfortunately, I would love

I would love for there to not enough, you know, be not enough patients to go around. But unfortunately, the reality is we have so many people who are dealing with cancer and the after effects of cancer and cancer treatments on a daily basis in our own communities. Yes, even where you live, even where you practice, there are these individuals who are facing this and do not have the availability of resources. They may not know that you’re out there and able to help them with this. And so we know that when we lift

each other up when we ensure that you and you and you and everyone in the cancer rehab community have the tools, have the information to help your own patients in your own community. It doesn’t just affect you and your neighbors, it affects all of us and it elevates the standard of cancer care within our communities and within our country and within our world. And that’s what matters and that’s what we are striving for. Now some more kind of last minute

important information about the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024. As I mentioned, it takes place virtually on Friday, November 8th and Saturday, November 9th, 2024. The conference on both days starts at 8 a.m. Central Time. Everything is in Central Time. So Friday, November 8th starts at 8 a.m. Central Time and then goes till 3.30 Central Time.

And then on Saturday, November 9th, it starts at 8 a.m. and then goes until 1 30 p.m. Central time. Again, central time, central time, central time. Stamp it in your brain, write it in a sticky note somewhere. Everything is central time. So virtual Friday, November 8th, Saturday, November 9th. You can register for the Cancer Rehab Community Conference from now until November 7th. On November 7th, registration closes and it will not be open again until next year.

So once that registration window closes on November 7th, that’s it. There is no retroactive opportunity to sign up for tickets. You have to get them now until November 7th. The Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024 is approved for physical therapy CEUs in 39 states. I think I counted that correctly. So we are approved for 8.25 contact hours in California,

Oklahoma, Texas, and many, many, many other states. Now the reason that I called those ones out, those are kind of like the outliers, and then I feel like the rest of the country does a really good job of like mutual

So for the full list we have that linked at TheOncoPT.com/conference and you can see all of the states that were approved for on the map that is linked there I also want to mention that we are approved for eight eight point eight point zero PT PTA contact hours in Illinois the reason there’s a difference Illinois has different requirements for how they mathematically calculate the hours

And so that’s why it’s slightly different between Illinois and the rest of the states. If you’re in Illinois or you do anything with CEUs, you know there have been some big changes over the last year. This is kind of part of that. Now, if your state is not indicated on the linked map at TheOncoPT.com/conference you may still be able to submit your CEU certificate on your own and get credit with your state licensing board. I cannot guarantee that.

Every state’s a little different. I’m in Texas. I swear, we just have to make everything more difficult in Texas, and this is one of those situations. So I cannot guarantee that that will be the case, but you can always try and submit for individual approval with your own state. Please note that CEUs are only available for those who have a professional ticket. So one of the cool things is that we do have student tickets.

for a deeply discounted price, but those student tickets are not eligible for CEUs. So if you are a student, if you are a newer professional, you are not looking for CEUs, you’re not interested in CEUs, this is absolutely a great option for you to still get access to all of the amazing information and content and presentations as part of the Cancer Rehab Community Conference. You just can’t submit for CEUs. So in order to submit for CEUs,

for attending the live conference, you’ll have to attend all of the sessions, day one and day two. You’ll have to sign in and out for both day one and day two. Those links will be provided at the conference, don’t worry. You have to complete the conference evaluation and then pass the learning assessment with a score of 80 % or higher. This mimics a lot of probably continuing education opportunities that you have. So that’s the process that we’ll see for the cancer rehab community conference as well.

As I mentioned, student tickets are also available. Remember, they are not eligible to claim CEUs for participating in the Cancer Rehab Community Conference. Now, I’ve been getting this question, and it’s a really great question, and I’m really glad that people are submitting this question, which is, what if I cannot make it to the live conference? What if I have a soccer game? Or, I don’t know, it’s too early for Girl Scout cookie bake sales, but you know, something like that.

I have blah blah during the live conference, but I still really wanna go. I still really wanna get the goodness. What the heck do I do?

No sweat. As long as you purchase your Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024 ticket by November 7th, remember November 7th is that really important date, you will get access to the post-conference recordings that we will release and share with everybody once the conference is over. Now usually it takes us about a week or two to process all the recordings, to trim them up, make them look really pretty, and then share them with you on our Cancer Rehab Community platform. And plus,

With your professional ticket purchase, you can also claim CEUs even if you can’t make it live to the whole conference. Here’s the process for that. If you can’t make it live to the whole conference, you will need to watch all of the conference recordings as they become available. We will let everybody know when that happens. You have to complete the conference evaluation and then pass the learning assessment with a score of at least 80%. All of this has to be done by

November 1st, 2025. So you’ve got like a whole year, a whole year from now until then when you can still watch all of these recordings, you’ll have access to them that whole time so you can go back and reference and then even claim your CEUs up till November 1st, 2025, which is pretty rad. I mean, most of the online conferences that I’ve been to lately, they keep their stuff up for maybe like a month and then they take them down.

For us, you get almost a full year of access to those recordings once the conference is done. Last question to cover here, are there group discounts available? Yes. If you have a group of three or more participants from your hospital, clinic, institution, system, whatever, that want to go to the conference together, email us at hello at the cancerrehabcommunity.com and then we will set that up for you.

The group discount is 15 % off of the combined pricing for three or more participants. But please remember those participants have to register together in order to enjoy that group discount. You can save your seat today, which you should because registration is almost closed. Save your seat today at the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024 by visiting TheOncoPT.com/conference

and we cannot wait to see you there. Remember that registration is almost closed. It will close on November 7th and we cannot wait to see you at the Cancer Rehab Community Conference 2024 happening Friday, November 8th and Saturday, November 9th.

But until the conference, this is Elise with the Onco PT. And remember, you are exactly the physical therapist that your patients with cancer need. So let’s get to work.
